Centers for Dental Medicine

Dentistry is a lot more than just beautiful smiles. Dentistry is important to your overall health! New research is coming out every day about the connection between the health of the mouth and the health of other areas of the body. It is now being called the “Oral-Systemic Connection” and you will frequently see magazine and newspaper articles on this subject. Keeping your teeth and gums healthy can increase your life expectancy by 10 years or more.

Centers for Dental Medicine (abbreviated CDM)has created a new standard of care for preventative medicine. CDM is a national organization of over 100 dental practices whose mission is to improve the health of our patients by being the bridge between dentistry and medicine. Through constant surveillance of ongoing research, and the newest methods of assessment and testing, CDM provides dental offices with the most current and complete information, products, procedures, services, and systems to address periodontal disease. If you are at risk for systemic diseases, your CDM dental office will coordinate with your medical health team to reduce your health risks and provide a comprehensive program.

Periodontal Assessment includes:

1-     Standardized Probing, Bleeding index, measurements of Mobility and Recession

2-     BANA test- done chairside, as a quick determination of the presence of 3 of the most common periodontal pathogenic bacteria

3-     Blood tests for C-Reactive Protein (measures whole-body inflammation) and Hemoglobin A1C (Measures chronic levels of blood sugar)

In addition, we do diagnostic testing from Oral DNA Labs:

  • The MyPerioPath salivary diagnostic test is based on an easy-to-collect saliva sample. This test identifies the types and concentration of specific periodontal bacteria that are known to be associated with periodontal disease. The report gives the dentist the specific bacteria, by type and quantity, and makes recommendations for the most effective antibiotic regimen. The test is done before and after periodontal treatment to provide information on the starting point and effectiveness of therapy.
  • The MyPerioID test, also based on a saliva sample, identifies individual genetic susceptibility to periodontal disease, and enables the dentist to establish which patients are at increased risk for more severe periodontal infections due to an exaggerated immune response.

Most of us have heard about the sad effects of periodontal disease: infection, inflamed gums, loss of bone support for the teeth, gum recession, and often, loss of the teeth. If left untreated, rampant bacteria will create periodontal pockets and destroy healthy bone. These complications can be devastating for a patient- taking a toll on their ability to eat, speak, and smile with confidence!

Ultimately, the same harmful bacteria that cause periodontal disease can negatively affect a patient’s overall health and well being. Periodontal disease is not just a nuisance, it’s a liability! Only recently have we understood that the chronic inflammation caused by persistent periodontal disease can actually affect the entire body, putting you at increased risk for a variety of health conditions, including:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart Disease
  • Stroke
  • Arthritis
  • Pregnancy complications: Pre-term birth and Low Birth-weight babies
  • Kidney Disease

How can CDM help you? Your Oral Health affects your overall well being, so our treatment system is designed to put your periodontal disease in remission and help you keep it in control, thus reducing your risk of other severe health conditions.
