Preventive Dentistry

“Preventive Dentistry” has become a standard phrase in dentistry. Almost every television advertisement for dental products says something about “prevention.” Most dentists would report that they are “Preventive Dentists.” But what exactly are we preventing?

I believe that the phrase most often refers to preventing decay. But there are a lot of issues around teeth that “prevention” could be applied to. I have found that the “Comprehensive Oral Exam” (most often done with New Patients) is the ideal occasion to observe and record developing conditions in the teeth, and to educate the patient and discuss preventive measures to help preserve the patient’s ability to chew and to smile. Photos are a key- it really helps to be able to show a patient pictures of their teeth, so they can see for themselves what is going on!
